About Margaret Hamilton
Margaret Heafield Hamilton is an American computer scientist, systems engineer and entrepreneur. She made a name for herself mostly through her contributions to the Apollo program by NASA in the 1960s and early 1970s.
She had previously worked at MIT's meteorology department where she is credited with developing a weather prediction software. She moved on from there to the institute's Lincoln Lab, where she worked on a software to help the US Air Force to locate potentially dangerous aircrafts. She is the founder of Higher Order Software and Hamilton Technologies.
Family Life
Born to Ruth Esther Partington and Kenneth Heafield, she grew up with a brother, David, and a sister, Kathryn. She was married to James Cox Hamilton from 1958 to 1967. Their daughter, Lauren, was born in November 1959. Two years after their divorce, she married a man named Dan Lickly.
Achievements
The Association for Women in Computing honored her with the Augusta Ada Lovelace award in 1986. She also received the NASA Exceptional Space Award in 2003. Barack Obama awarded her with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.
