About Margaret Murie
This conservationist and author is known as the “Grandmother of the Conservation Movement”. Murie was one of the few women to champion the American Conservative crusade.
Early Life
Maurie’s love for nature started as a young girl when her parents moved the family to Alaska in 1911. She would explore the vast land and sometimes live in a log cabin. She became the first woman to graduate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks in 1924.
Work
Murie met and married her husband Olaus in 1924 and three years later, they moved to Wyoming, where the couple spent their time protecting the wild. The couple went on an eight-month-long exhibition in Alaska’s Brooks Range. Maurie collected and studied specimens and lobbied Congress to pass conservative laws to protect nature. Some of her proposals got passed and were eventually approved and signed into law in 1964 by President Lyndon B. Johnson. This nature-lover devoted her entire life to creating awareness of the preservation of parks. In 1992, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Clinton
Death
Margaret Maurie died at the age of 101 in 2003.
