About Maria Callas
Maria Callas was a Greek-American soprano who rose to become one of the 20th century’s most celebrated and prominent opera singers. She was known for her unique voice, which enabled her to employ a wide range of singing techniques.
Family Life
Her parents were George Kalogeropoulos and Elmina Evangelia Dimitriadou. She had an elder sister called Yakinthi. Maria’s elder brother, Vassilis, died before she was born.
Between 1949 and 1959, she was married to Giovanni Battista Meneghini, a wealthy Italian industrialist. She started an affair with Greek shipping tycoon, Aristotle Onassis, in 1957, while she was still married to Meneghini. The relationship with Onassis ended in 1968.
Achievements
Callas was posthumously conferred with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. BBC Magazine named her the greatest soprano of all time that same year.
She was also inducted into Gramophone magazine’s Hall of Fame in 2012.
Trivia
Callas’ opera repertoire included “opera seria”, and compositions by Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Puccini and Rossini.
