About Maria Tallchief
Maria Tallchief was mostly credited for transforming ballet dancing in the United States. She has been described by many as the first major American ballerina.
She began her training at the age of three years in Los Angeles before joining New York-based Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo after moving to the city two years later. She later joined a ballet company known as New York City Ballet. As one of the top stars of her era, she performed in a number of concerts including Igor Stravinsky’s “The Firebird”.

She received the National Medal of Arts in 1999.

The city of Oklahoma honored her by declaring June 29, 1953 as the "Maria Tallchief Day”.
In the 1970s, she was named a director at the renowned Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Her sister was also a ballet dancer.
