About Marina Warner
Known for her outstanding writing ability, Marina Warner was awarded a Commonwealth Writers Prize in 1989 for her novel “The Lost Father”.
Family and Education
She spent some parts of her childhood in Cairo with her parents Esmond and Emilia Terzulli. She studied at St. Mary’s School and Lady Margaret Hall of the University of Oxford.
Warner has been married three times. Her third marriage was to Graeme Segal, an Australian mathematician. She has a son from her first marriage.
Career Highlight
After she completed her studies at Lady Margaret Hall, she landed her first job as a staff writer at The Daily Telegraph. She worked with the newspaper for a while and in 1969, she got employed at Vogue and worked as their feature editor. Aside from those media firms, she has worked with The London Review of Books, New Statesman and Sunday Times.
As a writer, she published her first book “The Dragon Empress: The Life and Times of Tz'u-hsi, Empress Dowager of China” in 1972.
She is also credited with penning other works, including “Alone of All Her Sex: The Myth and the Cult of the Virgin Mary” and “Joan of Arc: The Image of Female Heroism”.
In her career, Marina Warner has been honored a number of times. She was honored with the titles: Commander of the Order of the British Empire, Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire and Member of the Order of the Companions of Honor.
Accomplishments
She is a multi-award winner and she has won the following awards: Mythopoeic Award, Rose Mary Crawshay Prize, National Book Critics Circle Award, and the Sheikh Zayed Book Award.
Trivia
Marina Warner is considered as the first woman to have been elected as the president of the Royal Society of Literature (RSL) in 2017.
