About Marjorie Main
Marjorie Main was an American character actress and singer, best known for playing Ma Kettle in the “Ma and Pa Kettle” movie series in the 1940s and 50s. She appeared in many classic films, including “Dead End”, “The Shepherd of the Hills”, “Mr. Imperium”, and “Friendly Persuasion.”
Acting Career
The Los Angeles-born actress Main started her acting career in theatre, appearing in many Shakespeare performances. She made her screen debut in 1931, however, it was her 1934 film “Music in the Air” that she was credited for the first time in her career. During the 1940s, Main starred in over 30 films, including in films such as “Love in a Bungalow”, “Dead End”, and “Boy of the Streets”.
The 1940s saw her appear in films such as “The Wild Men of Borneo”, “Barnacle Bill”, "The Bugle Sounds”, and “The Show-Off”.
Honors and Achievements
Main was nominated for Best Supporting Actress by the Academy Award for her role in the 1947 romantic comedy “The Egg and I.” In that movie, which was directed by Chester Erskine, she starred alongside Fred MacMurray and Claudette Colbert.
The actress was also nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress. The nomination was for her role as the Widow Hudspeth in the 1956 Civil War drama film “Friendly Persuasion”, which had cast members such as Gary Cooper, Anthony Perkins, and Phyllis Love.
Personal Life and Death
She married Stanley LeFevre Krebs in 1921. He died in 1935, and his death affected Main. In 1975, she died of lung cancer. She was aged 85.
