2009 Hall of Fame Inductee Mark Steven Fidrych was a former American Major League Baseball pitcher who earned his name after the All-Star Award on 2 occasions from 1976 to 1977.
Early Life and Education
The baseball pitcher was born to Paul and Virginia Fidrych and lived his early life in Massachusetts. Fidrych grew up loving the game of baseball and joined the amateur Draft of the Detroit Tigers in 1974. He attended the Algonquin Regional High School and later graduated from the Worcester Academy.
Career
The baseball player continued with the Detroit Tigers from 1976 to 1980. During that time, he won the Rookie of the Year Award in 1976 and the AL ERA leader Award in the same year. Although he was only a non-roster invitee for the team, he dazzled the fans with his quirky style of play on the field. The baseball player retired from professional baseball in 1980 with an impressive record of more than 100 strikeouts.
Personal Life
Fidrych married Ann Fidrych in 1986. He died from an accident in 2009 and was survived by a daughter.
Trivia
He was given the nickname "The Bird" because he resembled the "Big Bird" character on the famous "Sesame Street television" program.
