A conservationist and travel writer, Mark Shand was an advocate for preserving endangered species like the Asian elephants. This 2014 Conservationist of the Year winner’s life was cut short doing what he always loved.
Background
The London, England-born found his love for elephants and nature in 1987 after a trip to Irian Jaya in Indonesia.
Career
This noble Englishman wrote the travel book “Travels on My Elephant” and he won the Travel Writer of the Year Award at the British Book Awards in 1992. He wrote other books like “Queen of the Elephants” and “River Dog: A Journey Down the Brahmaputra.”
To shine more light on the Asian elephants, he featured in documentaries for the BBC and the National Geographic Channel. Shand co-founded the Elephant Family in 2002 and was selected to receive the Fragile Rhino award from The Perfect World Foundation in 2014.
Death
The travel writer died in April 2014 from sustaining a head injury after a fall. He did not make it to receive his award at the Perfect World Foundation.
