About Marquis de Lafayette (Gilbert du Motier)
Lafayette, as he’s simply referred to, made his mark in world history after his heroic contribution during the American Revolutionary War between 1775 and 1783. He led the American army in lots of battles which includes the Battle of Yorktown. He was also an instrumental figure during the July Revolution as well as the French Revolution.
In 1787, he was named as a member of the Assembly of Notables in his native country (France).
Family
He was raised by his parents named Michel Louis du Motier and Marie Louise Rivière. He married Adrienne de Noailles in 1774 and left behind four children which includes former military officer, Georges Washington de La Fayette.
Trivia
His picture was used on some postal stamps in the U.S. to celebrate his 200th anniversary in 1957.
He was also known by nicknames like “The Hero of the Two Worlds”.
