Martha Argerich is a famous Argentine-Swiss pianist. She has earned many successes in her career and is widely regarded as one of the world’s greatest pianists. In addition, her chamber music performances and recordings have received wide international acclaim and recognition.
Background & Early Life
She was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Argerich was a precocious child, and she began learning the piano at age three. At age five, Italian music teacher Vincenzo Scaramuzza became her music teacher. The talented young pianist performed her debut concert at age 8, playing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20 in D minor. She then moved to Europe with her family in 1955, where Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli and Friedrich Gulda taught her.
Career Highlights
In 1957 and at age 16, she won two prestigious music competitions: “the Ferruccio Busoni International Piano Competition” and “the Geneva International Music Competition.” She earned international fame when she won the International Chopin Piano Competition in 1965.
Argerich’s exceptional technique and brilliant compositions have allowed her to perform worldwide. She has produced many award-winning recordings with several great composers including, Gidon Kremer.
Major Honors
As of 2021, she was a three-time Grammy Award winner. In addition, the pianist is a recipient of the Japanese “Order of the Rising Sun” and the “Japan Art Association’s Praemium Imperiale prize.”
