About Martha Graham
Martha Graham was an American choreographer and dancer whose unique style known as the “Graham technique” has been described as the foundation of modern dance in the United States. She spent more than seven decades in the business in which she worked as a performer and trainer.
As a dance tutor, she taught in schools like Eastman School of Music and the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre. In 1926, she established her own company called Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance which trained dancers like Jane Dudley and Erick Hawkins.
Family
She was the daughter of Jane Beers and her psychiatrist husband George Graham. In 1948, she became the wife of Erick Hawkins, but their marriage ended in 1954.
Education
This dancer was trained at the Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts.
Honors
Martha received the Presidential Medal of Freedom with Distinction. She was also honored with Japan's Order of the Precious Crown and Paris’ Key to the City. She was posthumously selected into the famous National Women's Hall of Fame in 2015.
