Family and Education
She was born to Elijah Joshua Reeves and Ruby Lee Gilmore Reeves and was the first child of her parents. Her parents had other children from previous marriages. The musician attended Northeastern High School in Detroit.
Career Highlights
Reeves started singing from childhood and adapted her love for singing from her parents. Growing up, she was influenced by Lena Horne and Della Reese.
In 1959, she was a member of the American pop group named The Fascinations but she left shortly after the group started to release songs.
In 1960, she officially joined The Del-Phis group, which had members including Rosalind Ashford and Annette Beard. While in the group, she also performed at popular nightclubs in Detroit. One day, during her performance at the 20 Grand nightclub, her performance caught the attention of the director for Motown Records Mickey Stevenson who later invited her to his office. During her time at Motown, she did administrative work and also became the right hand of Mickey Stevenson. She also sang in place of artists who couldn’t come to the studio.
The Del-Phis changed their name to Martha and the Vandellas. Some of their earliest songs include “Come and Get These Memories”, which was released in 1963 and written by Holland-Dozier-Holland. They also produced “Heat Wave”, which became the group’s best-selling song and peaked at number one on Billboard’s Hot R&B Charts. Other songs they released include “In My Lonely Room”, “Nowhere to Run”, “I’m Ready for Love” and “Dancing in the Street”.
She started her solo career when she got signed to MCA in 1973. She released her first album “Martha Reeves” the following year. Other albums she produced include “The Rest of my Life”, “We Meet Again”, and “Gotta Keep Moving”. The latter was released under Fantasy Records.
Trivia
In 2006, she made a minor appearance in the musical film “Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny”.
As of 2022, she serves as a board member of the Screen Actors Guild and stood on behalf of all musicians to plead for good royalties.
