About Martin Chalfie
American scientist Martin Chalfie began his research at the Laboratory of Molecular Biology after completing his doctoral studies. In 1985, he collaborated with fellow scientists John Sulston and Sydney Brenner to publish a book titled "The Neural Circuit for Touch Sensitivity in C. elegans".
Despite his numerous researches and works, Chalfie is best known for his part in discovering a type of protein known as the “Green Fluorescent Protein”. He’s also a University Professor and has worked with Columbia University.
Family
His mother Vivian Chalfie owned a boutique while his dad was a guitarist. In 1992, he had a daughter with a woman called Sarah.
Education
He graduated from Harvard University.
Achievements
In 2008, he was one of the recipients of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Other laurels that he has received include the Golden Goose Award, the Lomonosov Gold Medal, and the E. B. Wilson Medal. In 2004, he became a member of the National Academy of Sciences.
Trivia
He was one of the signatories of the “Mainau Declaration 2015 on Climate Change” at the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting in 2015.
Chalfie was a swimmer during his time in the university.
At a stage in his life he sold dresses at his mum’s boutique.
