About Martin Dempsey

Martin Dempsey accrued 41 years of active service in the United States Army. He passed out of the US Military Academy in 1974 and started his service in the 2d Armored Cavalry Regiment as a company-grade officer. 

By December 2008, he had become the Commanding General of the U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command. He occupied the office until April 2015 when he got promoted to the position of Chief of Staff of the Army.

His last stint in the military was in the capacity of Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from October 2011 to September 2015, when he retired.

Family Life

He was raised in Bayonne, New Jersey. He is of Irish descent through both his maternal and paternal grandparents, who were all born in Ireland. He has three children with Deanie, whom he met in high school.

Achievements

He received the Defense Distinguished Service Medal and the Army Distinguished Service Medal.

Trivia

He served as USA Basketball’s Chairman.

Title

US Army (USA) Brigadier General (BGEN) Martin E. Dempsey, 1st Armored Division (AD), gives a few remarks to the Iraqis who served unselfishly during previous wars in Iraq at a recognition ceremony held in the Convention Center in Baghdad, Iraq, during Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. They are being given recognition for past bravery to show they will be recognized for future bravery under the new Iraqi government. Since the end of major combat operations, the Iraqi Police Service (IPS), Facility Protection Service (FPS), and Iraqi Civil Defense Corps (ICDC) worked to hire, train, equip, and employ personnel throughout the city in a profession that often requires selfless service, sacrifice, and valor in the line of duty.
