Martin Denny was a revered and highly celebrated American pianist and composer. He was nicknamed the “father of exotica” and was a pioneering figure of “lounge music.” He released over 50 studio albums and compilation albums during his career.
Background & Education
The pianist was born in New York City and lived in Los Angeles for most of his childhood. He studied at the Los Angeles Conservatory of Music and the University of Southern California. In addition, he learned music composition and piano under Wesley La Violette.
Career Highlights
He toured with various famous bands and groups in the 1930s and later served in the US Army Corps during World War II. However, in the 1950s, he notably performed with his quartet at the “Hawaiian Village Hotel” and signed with Liberty records.
Denny’s band were noted for using unique natural settings and odd instruments for their music, such as Japanese kotos, conch shell, boobams, and Indonesian gongs.
He released his debut album, “Exotica,” in 1957, and it was number 1 on Billboard for several weeks. In 1958, his “Quiet Village” recording peaked in the Top five on Billboard’s Pop charts. Additionally, Denny released many smashing national hits, such as “The Enchanted Sea,” “A Taste of Honey,” and “Forbidden Island.”
