About Martin McGuinness
Martin McGuinness is considered one of the key personalities in the history of Northern Ireland. The astute politician was selected as the country’s Deputy First Minister in 1997 and served in that position for a decade.
McGuinness was elected into the UK Parliament in 1997 as a representative for the Mid Ulster constituency. The following year, he represented the constituency at the Legislative Assembly. Between 1999 and 2002, he worked as the Minister for Education.
During the Northern Ireland conflict, also known as ‘The Troubles’, he commanded the Provisional Irish Republican Army. He also played a key role in the preparation of the Good Friday Agreement which also helped in the formation of the Northern Ireland Assembly.
Personal Life
His four children with Bernadette Canning are Fionnuala, Emmet, Grainne, and Fiachra McGuinness.
Trivia
In 2017, he resigned from his position as Deputy First Minister following a Renewable Heat Incentive scandal.
