About Martin Niemöller
A founder of the anti-Nazi congregation known as the Confessing Church, Martin Niemöller was notoriously known for his numerous protests against the Adolf Hitler-led government. The German theologian gained international attention with his 1946 poem titled "First they came ...”.
For his stance against the "Aryan Paragraph", he was arrested and served seven years in prison starting from 1938. He also helped in preparing the ‘Stuttgart Declaration of Guilt’ which was declared in 1945. Niemöller published many books with some titled “Here Stand I!” and “From U-boat to Pulpit”.
Family
His parents were Pauline Müller and Heinrich Niemöller who, like his son, was a Lutheran pastor. He had six children with Else Bruner.
Decoration
In 1966, he received the Lenin Peace Prize. He was also a recipient of the Iron Cross First Class medal.
Trivia
Before becoming a pastor, he served in the German Empire’s Imperial Navy.
He was elected as the World Council of Churches’ president in 1961.
