Background
The La Plata born player started playing professional football at Estudiantes de La Plata in 1992 and was transferred five years later to Club Atlético Boca Juniors. He scored over 80 goals for the club from 1997 to 2001. The striker then transferred to Villarreal in Spain, where he made more than 60 appearances, scoring over 15 goals. Before his 2004 return to Boca Juniors, he played for Spanish football clubs Betis and Alaves.
He also had good international outings playing for his country but he had a dent in his career missing three penalties in a single international match against Colombia. In total, he played 15 times for Argentina national team, scoring 9 goals in the process.
Achievements
With Boca Juniors, he won the Primera División six times. He also won the Copa Libertadores twice – in 2000 and 2007.
In 2000, he was part of the Boca Juniors’ side that won the Intercontinental Cup.
In 1998, he was named South American Footballer of the Year.
He finished 16 times as Boca Juniors’ top scorer.
He also finished twice as Primera División’s top scorer.
Post Retirement
After he hung up his boots, he became a coach in 2012. He has managed a number of clubs, including Godoy Cruz, Pachuca, and Aldosivi. His role as manager has not been as memorable as a player.
Other interesting facts
Palermo moved to the Spanish La Liga club Villarreal CF in January of 2001, however he had a severe injury during his second season with the club.
