About Mary Blair
Mary Blair was one of the 20th century’s most prominent artists who left a huge impact on animation and art design. The former Walt Disney Company employee created several art concepts for some of Disney’s best animations, including “Dumbo” and “The Lady and the Tramp.”
Education
Blair attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles, California and graduated in 1933. She joined the California School of Watercolor as a member and immediately earned a reputation for being a highly imaginative artist.
Career and Works
She got her first start as an animator for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and then later proceeded to the Walt Disney Animation Studios in 1940. She was credited for her color styling works in “Cinderella”, “Alice in Wonderland”, and “Peter Pan”.
Blair also played a key role in making character designs for most of Disney’s attractions. She was also a book illustrator.
Legacy
Blair passed away in 1978. She was recognized as a Disney Legend in 1991 and also posthumously honored with the Winsor McCay Award in 1996.
