About Mary Lou Retton
Mary Lou Retton was born in West Virginia and is famously referred to as America’s Sweetheart. She was a gymnast. She developed an interest in gymnastics as a child when she watched the 1976 Summer Olympics. She started getting trained by Gary Rafaloski but moved to Texas and continued training under Béla and Márta Károlyi. Their influence on her was massive.
In 1983, she won The American Cup. In 1984, after the second American Cup win, she was signing autographs when she felt pain in her knee. She had hurt it previously and had to be operated on. Even though she was still recovering before participating in the Olympics, she won the Individual All-around Gold medal. She retired from gymnastics in 1986.
Personal Life
She married Shannon Kelley and together they had four daughters but the marriage fell on rocks in 2018.
Controversy
Together with some members of the USA Gymnastics, she tried to stop the passing of the Protecting Young Victims from Sexual Abuse and Safe Sport Authorization Act of 2017. They met Senator Dianne Feinstein who was sponsoring the bill to try and dissuade her but failed. This was in light of the 2017 USA Gymnastics Sex Abuse Scandal that gained attention across the world.
