About Mary Mccarthy
Mary Mccarthy was widely known for three things: her work as a novelist; her marriage to Edmund Wilson, the writer and literary critic; and her clash with playwright and author Lillian Hellman.
Her first novel, “The Company She Keeps”, published in 1942, became successful partly due to the controversy it generated for freely discussing somewhat taboo subjects at the time. Her best-known work is “The Group”, which was a New York Times Best Seller for close to two years.
Family Life
She and her three brothers lost their parents, Martha Therese Preston and Roy Winfield McCarthy in the 1918 flu epidemic. She was later raised by her maternal grandparents, Harold Preston and Augusta Morganstern.
She had a son with Edmund Wilson, her second husband and would marry twice after their divorce.
Achievements
She was honored with the Edward MacDowell Medal and the National Medal for Literature.
Death
She died on 25 October 1989 from lung cancer.
