About Mary Quant
Mary Quant was a fashion trailblazer during the 1960s. The British fashion icon and designer was credited for introducing the hotpant and miniskirt clothes. She began her career as a boutique operator before she turned her attention to designing.
Her unique styles, which were inspired by the lifestyle of socialites and artists, were widely patronized by the youth. She was also credited for introducing the patterned and colored tights, though many have mentioned Cristóbal Balenciaga as the originator.
Her parents Mildred and Jack Quant were both teachers. She was married to Alexander Plunket Greene with whom she had a son called Orlando.
She was a student of Blackheath High School before enrolling at Goldsmiths College.
For her contribution to fashion, Quant was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2015. Prior to that, she had won the Dress of the Year award, and British Fashion Council’s “Hall of Fame Award”.
In 1966, she published her autobiography titled “Quant by Quant”.
Laurent Voulzy, a French musician, dedicated one of the songs on his album “Avril” to the fashion icon.
