About Matthew C. Perry
Matthew Calbraith Perry came to earn the nickname, “Father of the Steam Navy” due to his advocacy of the modernisation of the United States Navy through the use of steam engines. Having earned his Naval midshipman’s warrant in 1809, he eventually attained the rank of commodore and served in the Navy until 1858. He commanded vessels such as the USS Shark, USS President, USS Fulton and the USS Mississippi and participated in wars like the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War.
Family Life
He was birthed by Sarah Wallace Alexander, the wife of US Navy captain, Christopher Raymond Perry. He was the brother of American naval commander, Oliver Hazard Perry. He had ten children with Jane Slidell Perry, whom he married in 1814.
Death
He died on 4 March 1858 from rheumatic fever.
