About Matthew Henson
Matthew Henson was working as a department store sales clerk when he met American explorer Robert Peary, The latter gave him a job as his personal valet in 1887 and proceeded on subsequent Arctic expeditions with him. The pair embarked on their first trip to Greenland within 1891/92 during which Henson was a craftsman and navigator.
What brought him immense fame was his participation in the 1908/09 expedition to Greenland whose participants claimed to have been the first people to reach the North Pole.
Family Life
He lost both of his sharecropper parents when he was still young. He had three sisters. In 1891, he married Eva Flint, whom he divorced in 1897. He later married singer and bank clerk Lucy Ross in 1907. He had just one son, Anauakaq, who was birthed by his Inuit concubine, Akatingwah in 1906.
Achievements
He received the Peary Polar Expedition Medal in 1944.
Death
He died at 88 years old on March 9, 1955.
