Matthijs de Ligt is a Dutch professional soccer player who mostly plays as a defender. His journey to fame started in 2016 when he made his first appearance for Dutch soccer side, AFC Ajax.
He played his first match for the team in 2016 against another Dutch side, Willem II. After becoming a regular member of the squad, he was named the club’s captain in 2018.
In 2019, he moved from Ajax to Italian club, Juventus, in a deal worth €75 million.
After playing for the various Dutch youth teams, Matthijs made his senior team debut in 2017. He was part of the Dutch team that played in the final of the UEFA Nations League in 2019.
Achievements
During the 2017-18 soccer season, he won the Dutch Football Talent of the Year. The following season, he was crowned the Dutch Footballer of the Year.
He also won the 2018 version of the Golden Boy Award before being included in the FIFA FIFPro World11 in 2019.
In 2017, he became the youngest player to appear in the final of a major European tournament.
He became the first defender to win the Golden Boy award in 2018.
