Maurice Cheeks is an American basketball coach. He is also a former professional basketball player who played for teams such as the Philadelphia 76ers, San Antonio Spurs, New York Knicks, Atlanta Hawks, and the New Jersey Nets.
Early Life and Career with the Philadelphia 76ers
Cheeks grew up in Chicago, Illinois. He attended DuSable High School before enrolling at West Texas State University, which was one of the few colleges that offered him a basketball scholarship. During his time in college basketball, he played as a starter and was a recognized three times as the most valuable player on his team. After graduating in 1978, Cheeks was drafted into the NBA and played for the Philadelphia 76ers for 11 years.
Other Career Highlights
Throughout his career, he played for four other teams before retiring at 36 years old. He took up coaching, serving as head coach for his first team, as well as the Portland Trail Blazers, and Detroit Piston. In 2018, Cheeks was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Trivia
One of Cheeks’ memorable moments on the court happened after he had retired. When a young singer forgot the words to the national anthem before a game, he helped her complete the song.
