Maurice Merleau-Ponty was a great French philosopher of the 20th century. He was widely regarded as one of the leading exponents of the study of Phenomenology in French.
Background & Education
He was born to a Catholic family in Charente-Maritime, France. Merleau-Ponty attended the lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris for his secondary school education. He was also a former student of the École Normale Supérieure. In 1929, he earned a “DES degree” from the University of Paris. He then passed his philosophy “agregation” examination in 1930.
Career Highlights
From 1945 to 1948, he was a philosophy professor at the University of Lyon. He then became a child philosophy and education lecturer at the University of Paris from 1949 to 1952. In addition, between 1954 and 1952, he was a co-editor of the “Les Temps Modernes” journal.
Major Works
His most notable philosophical works would be “Phénoménologie de la Perception (1945)” and “La structure du comportement (1942). He always emphasized that “perception” was the primary source of knowledge for humans.
He also wrote “Humanisme et terreur” – groups of essays widely considered the most sophisticated writings that defended “Soviet Communism” in the 1940s.
Death
He died at age 53 of a stroke in Paris on May 3, 1961.
