About Maurice Papon
Infamous for his Gaullist stance, Maurice Papon was a civil servant in Occupied France and served as a chief of police in the Vichy administration. In 1996, he was charged with crimes against humanity for his role in the deaths of about two hundred Jews during World War II (WWII).
Early Life
He was born in Gretz-Armainvilliers, France, to a solicitor father who became mayor. He attended Lycée Louis-le-Grand in Paris.
Notable Facts
During WWII, Papon served as the Secretary-General of the Gironde prefecture from 1942 to 1944. During this time, he was an active participant in executing the Nazi policy that saw to the arrest and imprisonment of many Jewish people. Many others were conveyed to Drancy internment camp and eventually deported to the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz, where they met a gruesome death.
In 1998, he was found guilty of crimes against humanity by the Assize Court of Gironde and was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. He spent about four years behind bars and was released due to health reasons. The former war criminal passed away on February 17, 2007. The cause of death was complications resulting from a heart surgery for congestive heart failure.
Trivia
Upon Papon's death, his lawyer wanted him buried with the insignia of “Commander of the Legion of Honour.” This sparked an outcry from most French political parties.
