About Maurice Stans
Maurice Stans was a well-known American accountant who worked with the Alexander Grant & Co organization between 1940 and 1955. A year before leaving the organization, he was named as the American Institute of Accountants’ president.
In 1958, he was appointed as the director of the Bureau of the Budget, succeeding Percival Brundage. He held said position until 1961. Eight years after leaving office, President Richard Nixon named him as the Secretary of Commerce.
Legal Issues
Stans was one of the officials named in the Watergate scandal. Though he claimed that he wasn’t aware of some of the actions, the famous accountant, in 1975, pleaded guilty for accepting unlawful campaign donations. He was later slapped with a fine of $5,000.
Family
He was raised by his parents Mathilda Nyssen and James Hubert Stans. With his wife Kathleen, Stans raised four kids.
Education
After completing Shakopee High School, he attended evening school at Northwestern University. He also studied at Columbia University.
Honors
In 1960, he became a member of the Accounting Hall of Fame. The American Institute of Accountants also honored him with their “Gold Medal for Distinguished Service to the Profession”.
Trivia
Between 1955 and 1957, he worked with the United States Deputy Postmaster General.
Stans was a co-founder of the famous African Wildlife Foundation.
He also published a book entitled “The Terrors of Justice: The Untold Side of Watergate”.
