About Max Beckmann
The German painter Max Carl Friedrich Beckmann doubled as a sculptor and a writer. The Expressionist artist created world-acclaimed pieces of art such as "The Night" and "Carnival."
Early Life
Beckmann found himself being born into a middle-class family. Even though he lived quite comfortably, Beckmann chose to live without the glamour and enlisted as a medical soldier in World War I. His traumatic experiences during the war led him into the world of expressional Art.
Career
Beckmann quickly rose to fame through his self-portraits described as deep and communicative. He enjoyed his success and was even called to teach a master's class in 1925.
1927 saw him receive the Honorary Empire Prize for German Art and a gold medal at the National Gallery in Berlin. His good fortune came to a standstill when Adolf Hitler clamped down on his work in 1933. After a 10-year exile, Beckmann began his painting again and finally obtained his professorship status at the Brooklyn Museum Art School in 1949.
Personal Life
Beckmann married Mathilda Beckmann in 1925 but later got divorced in 1950. He remarried for a second time, to Minna Beckmann from 1906 to 1925.
Death
Beckmann died in 1950, aged 66.
