Early Life
Frisch was born in Zurich, Switzerland in a middle-class home. He attended the University of Zurich to study German literature and linguistics. With his initial dream of becoming a writer, he was forced to switch to architecture when he was faced with financial pressures from home and set up his architecture business in 1942.
Literary Career
Despite pursuing a degree in architecture, he wrote his first novel “Jürg Reinhart” in 1934 and his second novel, “An Answer from the Silence” in 1937.
Frisch also branched into playwriting and his first written play; “Santa Cruz” was performed in 1946. He wrote several other plays in his career.
Recognition
He received several awards and accolades for his literary works, including the 1938 Conrad Ferdinand Meyer Prize, 1965 Jerusalem Prize, and the 1987 Neustadt International Prize for Literature, as well as several honorary doctorates from various universities. A new city square in Zurich was named after Frisch in 2015.
