About Max Liebermann
One of the most dominant advocates for impressionism, the German painter and printmaker masterminded the Berlin Succession, an art movement. Influenced by both French Impressionism and the Dutch Hague School, Liebermann tooled his naturalistic style in a way that deviated from the conservative style and genres of German art.
Early Life
Originally from Berlin, Germany, he trained under German graphic artist and painter, Carl Steffeck for two years.
Career Facts
One of his earliest works, “Women Plucking Cheese,” depicted his realistic and simplistic approach and earned him the byname, “disciple of the ugly”. Overtime, he departed from Realism and was drawn to a more impressionistic style. His subjects ranged from the hard labor of the poor to the hobbies of the bourgeoisie. He also painted portraits of prominent figures in German society. Most notable among them were physicist Albert Einstein and military figure Paul Von Hindenburg.

Recognition
On his 50th birthday, an exhibition was held in his honor at the Prussian Academy of Arts in Berlin.
