About Mayawati
Mayawati made history when she became the first Dalit woman (from India’s Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes) to occupy the office of chief minister of any state in India.
She became active in politics upon the advice of social reformer Kanshi Ram, who formed the Bahujan Samaj Party. She would eventually become the party’s national president in 2003. She was Uttar Pradesh’s Chief Minister for four non-consecutive terms and the Member of Parliament for Rajya Sabha from 2012 to 2017.

She was born Mayawati Prabhu Das to a post office worker father named Prabhu Das. She has never been married.
Achievements
She won UNICEF’s Paul Harris Fellow Award in 2003.
Trivia
She wrote the autobiography “A Travelogue of My Struggle-ridden Life and of Bahujan Samaj” which was published in two volumes.
