About Meena Kumari
Meena Kumari was a celebrated Indian film actress who began her career as a child actress appearing in a number of films, including 1939's Farzand-e-Watan. She went on to gain stardom as an adult starring in such films as 1952's Baiju Bawra, 1962's Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam and 1966's Phool Aur Patthar. She is regarded as one of the greatest Indian actresses of all time.
Family Life
She was born to Iqbal Begum and Ali Baksh. She was the younger sister of the renowned singer and actress Khursheed Bano. She was married to Indian film director and screenwriter Kamal Amrohi. The marriage was childless.
Trivia
At the time of her birth, her parents were so poor that her father abandoned her at an orphanage. He however, had a change of heart and went back for her.
She died tragically at the age of 39 from liver cirrhosis, which was caused by years of heavy drinking.
