About Mel Allen
The sports commentator had a career that spanned over three decades and was popularly known as the voice of the Yankees. He was also the host of “Thirty Minutes to Play” on CBS radio during the 1940s.
Education
He is an alumnus of the University of Alabama.
Career
Not long after he graduated in 1937, he began working at CBS Radio Network, announcing non-sports programs such as “Truth or Consequences”. In 1939, Allen became the lead announcer for the New York Yankees and the Giants. He called their games until 1943 when he enlisted in the United States Army during World War II.
Allen became the first presenter of the American television series “This Week in Baseball”, which ran from 1977 – 2011. He also announced the Warner Brothers & Vitaphone film “On the Air” and ‘Saturday Night Swing Club”.
Death
He died on June 16, 1996 after suffering a heart failure at the age 83.
