About Mel Stottlemyre
He was an American former baseball pitcher and coach. He was renowned for the eleven seasons he spent pitching for the New York Yankees. He also earned acclaim as a coach for teams such as the Houston Astros, the Seattle Mariners and his former team the New York Yankees.
Mel grew up in Mubton, Washington. He was an alumnus of Yakima Valley Community College in Yakima, Washington. The baseball player married Jean and they had two sons together. They lost their third child, an 11-year-old, to Leukaemia.
The outstanding baseball pitcher debuted in the Major League Baseball (MLB) in 1964 at age 22. He spent his entire 11-season career in the MLB playing for the New York Yankees. Mel had the highest number of 20-win seasons in his first 5 years – 3 20-wins in total, which was the highest record on the team in that decade. He was named to the All-Star five times, with his first coming in 1965.
Mel took up the lead coaching role for the New York Yankees in 1996 after racking up some solid experience coaching teams such as the Houston Astros (from 1994 to 1995) and the New York Mets (from 1984 to 1993). The legendary pitcher would coach the Yankees for the next 10 years.
Mel Stottlemyre coached the Seattle Mariners in the 2008 season. It was his last coaching job.
Multiple World Series Champion
With the New York Yankees, his first major coaching job, he steered the team to the World Series championship title in 1986. He repeated that feat four more times – in 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2000. He thus won the World Series title four times as the head coach of the New Yankees.
The star pitcher and accomplished coach died of cancer [multiple myeloma] at the age of 77. He succumbed to the disease after battling it for almost a decade.
In 2007, the celebrated baseball coach launched his autobiography called “Pride and Pinstripes”, co-authored by Mel and John Harper.
