About Melanie Safka
Melanie Safka had a career as a singer, songwriter and musician, something she began the late 1960s. Before making her official debut, she performed at a New Jersey-based coffee house known as The Inkwell and in folk clubs. She was recognized internationally for her hit songs “What Have They Done to My Song Ma”, “Brand New Key”, “Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)” and “Ruby Tuesday”.
Family Life
She grew up in Astoria, Queens, New York City under the care of her mother, Pauline Altomare and father, Frederick M. Safka. She was married to Peter Schekeryk, a record producer from 1968 until he died in 2010. The marriage produced three children.
Achievements
She was awarded an Emmy Award, an AMG Heritage Award and a Billboard Number 1 Top Female Vocalist award.
Trivia
She was the lyricist for the “Beauty and the Beast” television series’ theme song, “The First Time I Loved Forever”.
