She also played one of the main roles in the legal drama television series Sweet Justice. Gilbert’s career is mostly composed of appearances in numerous television movies like The Diary of Anne Frank (1980), Choices of the Heart (1983), and The Miracle Worker (1979), the last of which gained her a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Helen Keller.

She once served as the president of the labor union Screen Actors Guild, which represents all film and television performers around the world, from 2001 to 2005.
