About Melvyn Bragg
Melvyn Bragg started writing at the age of 19 years. In 1965, he published his first novel which was named “For Want of a Nail”. Since then, he has published many books which includes “The Soldier's Return” series and “On Giants' Shoulders”.
Aside from that, he has also written quite a number of film and television screenplays and is best known for his numerous collaborations with filmmaker Ken Russell. The two worked on the 1967 film “Isadora Duncan, the Biggest Dancer in the World”.
Media career
Bragg is best known for his works on radio and television. His career began in 1961 when he joined the BBC as a trainee. Between 1978 and 2010, he worked as the host of the TV show entitled “The South Bank Show”.
The celebrated British broadcaster is best known as the host of BBC’s radio program titled “Start the Week”. In 1998, he was named as the host of the company’s “In Our Time” radio show.
Family
He was raised by his parents Stanley Bragg and Mary Ethel Park. His first wife, Marie-Elisabeth Roche with whom he had a daughter called Marie-Elsa Bragg, died by suicide in 1971. After the death of his first wife, he married Catherine Haste and separated in 2016. He later got married to Clare-Hunt in 2019.
Education
Melvyn attended Oxford University where he studied Modern History. Before that, he studied at The Nelson Thomlinson School.
Awards
He received many awards including the Writers' Guild Screenplay Award, BAFTA Academy Fellowship Award, and the Ivor Novello Musical Award. He was also selected into some high-profile institutions like the Royal Society, and the British Academy. Bragg became a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2018.
Trivia
Between 1999 and 2017, he served as the University of Leeds’ Chancellor.
In 1997, he donated over £5,000 to the Labour Party. He also served in the House of Lords.
