About Menachem Mendel Schneerson
Many have attributed the rise of Judaism during the 20th Century to the works of Menachem Mendel Schneerson. He is celebrated for transforming a Hasidic group, which was nearly wiped out during the Holocaust, into one of the most powerful religious groups in the world.
As the head of the famous Chabad-Lubavitch dynasty, Schneerson gained many followers due to his numerous humanitarian works which included building social and educational centers. He went on to author many books with the most popular ones titled “Letters from the Rebbe” and “The Letter and the Spirit”. Due to his works, he was considered as the “Messiah” by some followers of the faith.
Family
He was the son of Levi Yitzchak Schneerson, who was a renowned rabbi, and his wife Rebbetzin Chana Schneerson. He had two brothers named Yisrael Aryeh Leib, and Dov Ber. He was married to Chaya Mushka Schneerson.
Education
He attended the University of Berlin where he read mathematics, philosophy, and physics.
Death
Schneerson died in 1994 after suffering from a stroke.
Recognition
He was honored with the Congressional Gold Medal in 1994.
Trivia
Since 1978, his birthday has been celebrated as the “Education and Sharing Day”.
He mastered the Talmud at the age of 17 years.
He was ordained by Yechiel Yaakov Weinberg, and Rogatchover Gaon.
