About Meredith Willson
American flutist and composer Meredith Wilson was born in Mason City, Iowa. In his early teens he learned how to play the flute and had an ear for good music. Wilson attended New York’s Institute of Musical Art where he studied the flute.
Music Career
After school he toured the United States, Cuba and Mexico as a flutist with John Philip Sousa’s Band between 1921 and 1923. Sometimes known as “The Music Man”, Willson played temporarily in New York’s Rialto Theatre Orchestra as well as the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and the New York Chamber Music Society.
Willson was well known for his 1957 Broadway musical hit “The Music Man”, which won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 1958.He won the first Grammy in National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences History in 1959.
Death
In 1984, Meredith Willson died of heart failure at 82.
