About Michael Ondaatje
After obtaining his master’s certificate in 1967, Michael Ondaatje began his career as an author. The Canadian writer is globally known for his 1992 award-winning book entitled “The English Patient”. His novel, “The Collected Works of Billy the Kid”, which was published in 1970, has also received positive feedback from some notable scholars.
Family
His parents divorced when he was very young. He’s the brother of famous business man Christopher Ondaatje. He is the ex-husband of filmmaker Kim Ondaatje.
Education
He attended Dulwich College and Bishop's College School before enrolling at the University of Toronto for his first degree. He later joined Queen's University at Kingston for his master’s program.
Awards
Throughout his career, Ondaatje has been decorated with many prizes including the Governor General's Award – Poetry, Giller Prize, and the Booker Prize. He became an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1988.
The American Academy of Achievement honored him with their “Golden Plate Award” in 2008.
Trivia
The 1996 film, “The English Patient”, was based on his 1992 novel of the same name.
Brignolia ondaatjei, a type of spider which was first seen in Sri Lanka, was named in his honor.
