Germany-born Michael Detlef Stich played tennis professionally in the past. After being ranked 80th in the world the previous year, he won the men's singles title at Wimbledon in 1991.
Early Life
Elmshorn, Schleswig-Holstein, is his birthplace. In 1990, in Memphis, Tennessee, he won his first major singles championship after turning professional in 1988.
Career
In a five-set, five-hour final that went into Monday in 1992, he joined up with John McEnroe to capture the men's doubles crown at Wimbledon. Since then, no male player has won Wimbledon's singles and doubles competitions. He lost to Andre Agassi in 1994’s Grand Slam.
After Wimbledon in 1997, he declared his retirement from the professional tour. He's devoted himself to his own AIDS nonprofit since retiring.
Achievements
He amassed ten doubles titles and eighteen singles titles. World No. 2 (singles) was his highest position during his career.
