Family
He was born to William and Nancy Whelan. He has a son named Adrian Price-Whelan.
Education
He obtained a B.A. in painting from the San Jose State University and later went to study at the Art Center College of Design in California.
Career
The painter showcased his work at the World Science Fiction Convention in Washington, D.C. and caught the attention of German translator and literary agent Thomas Schlueck who later used it in European journals.
Donald A. Wollheim, an American sci-fi editor, handed Whelan his first work contract where he painted the cover and picture drawing for the fantasy book “The Enchantress of World’s End”, which was written by Lin Carter in May 1975.
Honors
Whelan became the first living painter to be honored with an induction into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame. This honor came in June 2009.
The artist is the recipient of Three World fantasy Awards for “Best Artist” (1981, 1982, & 1983).
He also received the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America Solstice Award in 2011 for his influence in the development of science fiction and fantasy work.
