About Miguel de la Madrid
After leaving his post as the Deputy Secretary of Finance and Public Credit of Mexico in 1979, Miguel de la Madrid was named as the country’s Secretary of Budget and Planning during the José López Portillo-led administration.
He held other leadership roles before he decided to contest for the presidency in 1982. On the ticket of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, de la Madrid won the elections and became Mexico’s 59th President. His tenure was disturbed by a severe financial and economic crisis. His handling of the Mexico City earthquake in 1985 also made him unpopular in his country.
Family
He was the son of renowned lawyer Miguel de la Madrid Castro and his wife Alicia Hurtado Oldenbourg. He grew up alongside an older brother. In 1959, he married Paloma Cordero, who would serve as the country’s First Lady. He had five kids including politician Enrique Octavio de la Madrid Cordero.
Education
At the National Autonomous University of Mexico, he read law. He continued at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.
Trivia
It was during his administration that the country hosted the FIFA World Cup in 1986.
Four years later, he joined the Fondo de Cultura Económica as the director.
In a 2012 survey, 30% of the respondents described de la Madrid’s tenure as "very bad".
