About Miguel Delibes
Cartoonist, journalist, novelist and essayist, Miguel Delibes wears all the hats of the Spanish foremost writer. This Nadal Prize winner dedicated a large part of his life to his passion and was a member of the Royal Spanish Academy.
Background
The descendant of French and Spanish, Delibes joined the Navy during the Spanish Civil War. After the war, he attended the School of Commerce where he studied law before enrolling in the Escuela de Artes y Oficios (School of Arts and Crafts). His first job was as a cartoonist with the El Norte de Castilla newspaper.
Career
Feeling stable as a law professor, husband, and father, Delibes started writing his first work” La sombra del ciprés es alargada” (The cypress casts a long shadow) in 1947. His second book, “Aún es de día” (It is still daytime) was heavily censored. His most notable works were “El Camino” (The road), “Cinco horas con Mario” (Five Hours with Mario) and “Un año de mi Vida” (A Year of my Life), a personal diary.
Personal Life
Delibes married Ángeles de Castro who was his literary inspiration in 1946 and they had eight children together.
