About Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was a Criollo Roman Catholic priest. He is a preeminent figure in Mexican history.
Priesthood
He attended San Nicolás College and learned about the priesthood. Then, in 1773, he earned a bachelor’s degree in theology and philosophy from the Royal and Pontifical University of Mexico.
In 1778, he received an ordinance as a Catholic Priest. He served in parishes in Colima and Dolores throughout his priesthood.
Mexican Independence
In 1810, his speech, “Cri de Dolores,” called on Mexican civilians to revolt and protest against the European Spaniards who had overthrown King Fernando VII and the Spanish viceroy.
In 1811, he led and marched with about 90,000 men across Mexico and eventually assembled at the Calderon Bridge. They attacked and murdered numerous Criollo and Peninsulares elites in the region. However, they encountered the well-trained Royal Army outside of Guadalajara. Many men were killed or almost escaped. Allende betrayed Hidalgo on his way north, which led to his capture and execution by a firing squad.
Legacy
Although his accomplishments did not yield instant results, many uprisings continued after his death, leading to Mexico’s eventual independence in 1821.
His ashes have been buried at Mexico City’s “Angel of Independence” monument, cementing Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla’s legacy as “Father of Mexican Independence.”
