About Mike Mills
American multi-instrumentalist and singer Mike Mills is part of the founding fathers of the R.E.M., an American rock band that was formed in Athens in Georgia. The California rock star served as the songwriter of many R.E.M’s hits. He has been active since 1980.
Background and Education
Mike is from Orange County, California but grew up in Macon, Georgia. He is an alumnus of University of Georgia in Athens.
R.E.M. and Music Highlights
The guitarist formed the R.E.M. band at the university with rock musician and drummer Bill Berry. He is known to have composed a good number of R.E.M.’s songs, inlcuding “Nightswimming”, “At my Most Beautiful”, and “Why Not Smile”. He was also behind the backing vocal and harmony parts found in the band’s catalogue. The band was dissolved in 2011. Since 2010, Mike Mills has been performing with a rotating group of musicians during concerts. He has worked with rock musician Warren Zevon and Patterson Hood. The latter is a member of the rock band Drive-By Truckers.
Personal Life
He married Jasmine Pahl. He has a son called Julien.
Trivia
He’s been involved in the music supergroup The Baseball Project. The group includes Peter Buck, Linda Pitmon, and Scott McCaughey.
