About Mikhail Kalashnikov
Mikhail Kalashnikov changed the firearms industry in a way that he probably never envisaged. He served in the Red Army of the Soviet Union and while recovering from his wounds sustained during the Battle of Bryansk, he overhead complaints from his fellow soldiers concerning their rifles. This is what motivated him to develop the famous AK-47 gun, completed in 1947.
Kalashnikov later developed other famous rifles such as the AKM, AK-74, RPK light machine gun and the PK machine gun.
Family Life
He was born to Timofey Kalashnikov and Aleksandra Kaverina. He had four children with his second wife Ekaterina Moiseyeva. He had previously been married to Ekaterina Astakhova.
Achievements
His awards include the USSR State Prize, Lenin Prize, Order of St. Andrew and Hero of Socialist Labour.
Death
He died from gastric haemorrhage on 23 December 2013.
