About Miklós Horthy
Miklós Horthy was a Hungarian naval officer and conservative statesman who led the Hungarian army to defeat revolutionary forces following the end of World War I. He was later appointed Hungary's head of state until 1944 when he was abducted by the Germans and forced to surrender his position.
Early Life and Military Career
Born Miklós Horthy de Nagybánya, Horthy grew up in a prestigious Hungarian family in the 1860s. He began his career in the Hungarian navy as a sub-lieutenant and rose to become commander-in-chief in 1918. After defeating revolutionary forces the following year, the Hungarian parliament restored the country's monarchy and appointed Horthy as its regent.
World War II
While Horthy did not play any significant roles in the country's public affairs, he started to gain more control when he set his sights on reannexing some of the territories Hungary had lost in previous treaties. This endeavor led him to the German leader, Adolf Hitler, who at the time was planning to change Europe with the help of countries like Hungary.
Although Hungary initially sided with Germany at the start of World War II, Horthy was abducted when he attempted to remove his country from the war. He was later released by Allied troops and exiled to Portugal.
Later Life and Death
While in exile, he wrote his memoir "A Life for Hungary", narrating his life experiences. Horthy died in 1957, aged 88.
Personal Life
He married Magdolna Purgly de Jóscáshely, and they had 4 children together.
